Who’s “Gen Z”?/ Z世代って？

Welcome back! Do you know about "Generation Z"? In short, "Gen Z" is a demographic term and infers people who were born in roughly 1996~2005. The definition is vague and the generation infers those who were born after 1993 in Canada. If under 27 year-old, you are categorized of Gen Z. Recently, this generation has been in spotlight because they account for about a quarter of the population in the U.S. (Newsletter : The Hartman Group) and they seem to have a huge power, becoming voting age.
初めてタイトルに日本語を入れてみた訳ですが、”Z世代” という言葉を聞いたことがありますか？ Z世代とは1996〜2005年の間に生まれた人々のこと。主にアメリカ合衆国ではこの年代を指しますが、カナダの統計局では1993年生まれ以降を指すので厳密な定義はなさそう。2020年の現在、27歳以下の人はZ世代に当てはまると考えてみてね。近年、アメリカでは選挙権を持つ年齢に到達し始めたZ世代が総人口の４分の1を占めるとされ（Newsletter : The Hartman Group ）注目されています。

I was surprised at the fact people who are 24-39 year-old now are called Millennials. In Japan, Millennial generation is usually about those who were born after 2000. This idea focuses when they spend their teenage instead of in which era people were given birth.
驚いたのが、24〜39歳の世代がミレニアム世代だということ。日本ではよく2000年以降生まれのことをミレニアム世代というよね。だけどこの考え方では、いつ生まれたかではなく、10代以降をいつの時代に過ごしたかを焦点としています。

About more ratially diverse than any other generations
Recently, it's been said that white people will be minority in the states and it is clearly true that Hispanic or Asian American is accounting for a large part of population. Japan is also the same. Every year the number of foreign residents is increasing. So it seems natural to me that Gen Z is ratially diverse because they've been brought up with people who have various racial backgrounds since childfood.
どの世代よりも人種的に多様
アメリカで圧倒的多数派だった白人が数十年後には少数派になると言われていますが、ヒスパニック系、アジア系アメリカ人や、移民の数が増加傾向にあるのは確かです。日本でも年々、外国人居住者や労働者が増えているよね。Z世代は様々な人種が共存する社会で育っている世代なので多様な人種に寛容なんだと思います。
About the most educated generation
The popuation of going to university or college is larger than other generations for sure. This is great and I hope more people can access to education regardless of gender, income and place they live in. Ms. Malala Yousafzai said, "One pen can change the world", there is no doubt about it.

確かに大学や短大、専門学校へ進学する人口は、他のどの世代よりも多いです。これについては素晴らしいことだと思うし、性別、収入、生まれた場所に関わらず、誰もがもっともっと高等教育に手が届く世の中になって欲しいと願います。”ペンは剣より強し” 有名な言葉ですが、まさにこれに尽きると思います。
About desital natives
Compared to Millennials, "desital pioneers", Gen Z is called "desital natives". In short, Internet or desital gigs are taken granted by Gen Z because those things have existed before they were born. Surely, Gen Z starts using SNS such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram from early age.
デジタルネイティブであるということ
Z世代は、デジタルパイオニアであるミレニアム世代に対して、デジタルネイティブと呼ばれます。つまりZ世代にとって生まれた頃からデジタルは当たり前のように存在していたということ。私自身まさにZ世代ですが、物心が着く頃にはインターネットのある生活だったし、中学生の頃には既にSNSが身近に存在していました。モバスペやGREE、mixi、デコログの時代を通ってからのツイッターやフェイスブック、インスタだったと思います。（全部めちゃくちゃ懐かしい！）
Furthermore, Millennials and Gen Z have some things in common. Mainly, they have similar political ideas. For example, they are more affirmative towards same-sex mariage and sexual minorities and they're also aware of environment issues and racial discrimination.
さらにZ世代と１つ上のミレニアム世代にはいくつか共通点があります。主な共通点は、政治的趣向が似てること。例えば、同性婚やセクシュアルマイノリティを他の世代よりも受けれる姿勢を持っていたり、環境問題、人種差別問題への意識の高さなどが挙げられます。
Researching "Generation Z", I found that they are more likely to be have diverse ideas and highly consciousness for social matters. This is not only because of the background they were brought up also because they're higher educated than any other generation, I think. Of course it eventually depends on each person. Some of Gen X or Baby Boomers also might be tolerant to racial and sexual diversity and some of Gen Z might be not. But knowing that people tend to have different values by their generation helps you avoid unnecessary confliction.
Z世代を調べてみて感じたことは、従来の考え方や習慣にとらわれず、変化に寛容であるということ。もちろん、エックス世代やベビーブームの世代でも人種の多様性に寛容な人は沢山いるし、Z世代であっても上記の特徴に当てはまらない人だって勿論いると思います。だけどそれぞれの世代にそれぞれの風潮や価値観があることを知れば、他の世代の人との不要な衝突を回避し、上手く付き合っていけるのではないでしょうか？
